The present boundaries of Nez Perce County were set in 1911. Lewiston served as the territorial capital for twenty-two months before the capital was moved to Boise.
The county is named after the Nez Perce tribe, who inhabited the region for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The county is home to a number of historical sites and landmarks, including the Nez Perce National Historical Park and the Lewis and Clark Trail.
