Lake Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway
The Lake Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway in Idaho is an incredible drive along the scenic lake of the same name. This byway offers stunning views of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The drive is about 35 miles long taking about an hour and a half, and the views are breathtaking. Along the byway, you’ll be able to explore the lake’s many hidden coves, beaches, and nature trails. You can also take a relaxing cruise on the lake.

The byway begins at the junction of I90 and Highway. 97 near Coeur d’Alene, and winds its way along the lake’s shores. You’ll be able to enjoy the wonderful views of the lake from the many overlooks along the way. There are some stops and detours available along the way such as the Thompson Lake Wildlife refuge: a wetlands area managed by Idaho Fish & Game. You can do a short driving loop, a recreational trail, and stop at the Wolf Lodge for some spectacular views.

Along the byway you’ll go through the town of Harrison, named at the time of founding in 1891 for President Benjamin Harrison. There you can find many quaint shops and restaurants. It’s also the gateway to the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, a 73 mile long rails-to-trails paved hiking and biking route that runs northeast all the way to Kellog and the Silver Valley.

For those looking to explore the lake’s wildlife, there are many opportunities. The lake is home to a variety of fish and birds, including bald eagles and the largest nesting osprey population in the Western states. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing drive or an exciting adventure, the Lake Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway has something for everyone.
