Elk River Backcountry Byway
The Elk River Backcountry Byway in Idaho is a stunningly beautiful road that winds its way through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state. The two-lane road runs through the thick pine forest and mountain landscape of the Idaho panhandle, taking travelers on a journey through untouched wilderness.

The Byway begins in the town of Orofino and takes you up Dent Bridge Road, through Elk River, and ends in Bovill. You will drive past the Elk River and its tributaries, crossing Dent Bridge (the tallest bridge in Idaho) and through the Clearwater Mountains. Along the drive, you can observe the beauty of the area’s lush green forests, rushing rivers, picturesque mountain towns, and rocky terrain.

You’ll start your road trip at Orofino, just off of ID 12, which is a pretty mining town along the Clearwater River. Located within the Nez Perce Reservation, it is a popular spot in north Idaho for fishermen, hunters, and boaters. If you want to stay the night here, there are some cute cabin rentals along the river, and lots of camping spots.

As you travel north through the forest, you will have the opportunity to catch site of native north Idaho wildlife. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, black bears, elk, deer, and moose, all of which make the forest their home.

Fairly soon, you will encounter the Dworshak Reservoir and cross Dent Bridge. This is a 17 mile suspension bridge that is the tallest in Idaho. The reservoir itself is home to a large number of steelhead trout, thanks to the The Dworshak National Fish Hatchery – the largest steelhead hatchery in the world. It is also a great spot for boating, swimming, and camping in the summer.

The next main off-road attraction is Elk Creek Falls, a beautiful waterfall you can reach from a trailhead from the main road. This is a short hike that leads to three separate 140 foot waterfalls, surrounded by mossy rocks and green forest. I highly recommend taking the time to visit the falls, as they are some of the most impressive in Idaho.

Next, you will reach the town of Elk River. You can stop at Elk River General store for huckleberry ice cream, visit Gazebo Park, or try some local beer at Shattuck Brewery.

Turn onto ID-8 and drive until you reach the town of Bovill, ID, which is the last stop on the Byway. From here you could continue on to Moscow, Lewiston, or even Couer d’Alene if you want to experience more of north Idaho’s unique landscape.

The Elk River Backcountry Byway is a great way for travelers to experience Idaho’s natural beauty without having to trek or backpack through its rugged terrain. If you’re looking for a road trip that will take you through some of the most stunning landscapes in the Gem State, the Elk River Backcountry Byway is a great place to start.
